Behind the Headlines: What a School Wall Crack Actually Revealed

ABC-11 interviewed me about the emergency structural repairs at three Wake County elementary schools. Here’s what the story shows about how structural problems actually get found.

This week, ABC-11 covered the emergency structural repairs underway at three Wake County elementary schools — buildings roughly 35 years old, now getting millions of dollars of work on a tight summer deadline. I was interviewed as a structural engineer, and the story is a good illustration of something that surprises a lot of people: the crack everyone can see is often not the thing that’s actually dangerous.
How an investigation like this starts
Investigations often begin with something visible. In this case it was a crack in a masonry block wall that had been slowly propagating over time. It was monitored, and as the movement continued and began to look concerning, the decision was made to take a closer look rather than simply patch it.
That decision matters more than it sounds. Patching a crack makes the symptom disappear. It tells you nothing about the cause.
Looking past the surface
The closer look meant scanning the wall with equipment that locates the reinforcing steel inside the masonry. The scan turned up something important: the reinforcement didn’t match what the original structural drawings called for. What was actually built didn’t line up with what had been designed — and that finding is what justified a full forensic investigation.
From there, the investigation identified concerns with the connections at the roof framing level, along with the roof support structure itself. That’s the part that matters most.
Why the connections — not the crack — are the real concern
Here’s the counterintuitive part.
The masonry crack itself often isn’t the emergency. Cracks like that are frequently tied to settlement, and settlement can usually be monitored and addressed over time. It looks alarming, but on its own it is often a manageable, plan-for-it problem.
Connections are a different story. Connections are what tie a structure’s pieces together and carry load from one element to the next. When a connection is deficient — especially at the roof — the failure mode is sudden. There is no slow, visible cracking to warn you first. That is the type of failure engineers work hardest to rule out, and it is the difference between a maintenance item and a genuine life-safety issue.
It’s also why the hidden finding, not the visible one, drove the emergency response.
Get to the root cause
The forensic work on these schools is still underway, and it’s possible more will surface as it’s completed. That’s the nature of this work. You have to get to the root cause — otherwise you fix the thing you can see, leave the thing you can’t, and you’ve applied a Band-Aid rather than a repair.
What this means for any building owner
A visible symptom is a reason to investigate, not the whole story. A propagating crack is worth taking seriously — not necessarily because the crack itself is dangerous, but because of what looking into it might reveal.
And as-built conditions matter. What actually got constructed doesn’t always match what was drawn, and the only way to know is to look.
Whether it’s a school, a commercial building, or a house, the principle holds. If something is moving, cracking, or sagging, the right response isn’t to panic about the crack or to ignore it. It’s to have someone qualified determine whether it’s cosmetic, a settlement issue you can manage over time, or a symptom of something more serious underneath.
